Getting the Most Out of Your Workout & Day

Well I found these “10 Easy Ways to Get the Most Out of Your Day” and found that most of them apply to workouts, and triathlon in general. These won’t follow one to one…

  1. Purpose your workout. Start each workout with a goal, or specific purpose. Know where each workout fits into the overall picture of what you are trying to accomplish. Is this helping you get better on hills? Faster on the flats. Improving form?
  2. Start off great. A good warmup is key, but starting great also includes everything you do leading up to the workout. Drinking your fluids, getting some nutrition taken care of, will help with this. From there, warm up. If you have a favorite route to take for warm-ups, something senic, or otherwise pleasant, go for it.
  3. Focus on the goal. This works well with number 1. If you know what you are trying to accomplish with the workout, focusing on it will help you get through the rough spots.
  4. Make an “appointment” with yourself. Set aside some time to workout. With a busy schedule, juggling work, kids, home, etc this may not be easy. Once you find a time try workout at a consistent time every day. This will require buy-in from your family, but once you have it, it makes life much easier.
  5. Find your prime time. This goes well with number 4. If you can get the buy in, and work out when you are feeling good, up beat, and in general energetic, the workout will roll by that much faster, and be that much more productive. Instead of having to fight yourself to do it.
  6. Focus on the important. This gets a bit repetitive, but keeping your eye on the prize will help you get past the evil “I need to stop” or the “If i turned back now” thoughts that creep in as things get tough.
  7. Finish Strong. Save some for the end. Instead of going all out, finish with a feeling that you could have done a bit more. Completely expending yourself can lead to injury, and lack of focus on the goal.
  8. Review your workout. After you are done, cooled off and showered, think back on the workout, your form, your performance, what went right, wrong, what you could have done better, and make a short list of things to improve upon for next time.
